{"id":1365,"date":"2023-08-03T08:36:43","date_gmt":"2023-08-03T08:36:43","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/medinaz.com\/blog\/?p=1365"},"modified":"2023-08-05T05:30:59","modified_gmt":"2023-08-05T05:30:59","slug":"angles-classification-malocclusion-dental-notes","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/medinaz.com\/blog\/2023\/08\/03\/angles-classification-malocclusion-dental-notes\/","title":{"rendered":"ANGLE\u2019S CLASSIFICATION MALOCCLUSION &#8211; Dental Notes"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>ANGLE\u2019S CLASSIFICATION OF MALOCCLUSION &#8211; High-yield Dental Notes<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>Malocclusion refers to the improper alignment or relationship between the teeth of the upper and lower dental arches as the jaws come together.<\/li><li>The term was first classified by <strong>Edward Angle<\/strong>, acknowledged as the <strong>father of modern orthodontics<\/strong><\/li><li>Angle&#8217;s classification system was grounded on the relative position of the permanent <strong>MAXILLARY FIRST MOLAR<\/strong>.<\/li><li>He proposed that the relationship of the front and back dental bases can be accurately evaluated based on the relationship of the first permanent molar, given its stable position post-eruption.<\/li><li>In scenarios where the first molars are absent, the <strong>CANINE<\/strong> relationship is employed as a reference point.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2>NORMAL OCCLUSION<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul><li><strong>Molar Relationship<\/strong>: Angle postulates that the mesiobuccal cusp of the upper first molar fits into the buccal groove of the lower first molar in a normal occlusion.<\/li><li><strong>Canine Relationship<\/strong>: In a normal bite, the upper canine fits in between the distal half of the lower canine and the mesial half of the first premolar in the lower jaw. <\/li><li><strong>Occlusal Line:<\/strong> This is a continuous curve that all the teeth adhere to. In the upper jaw, this curve passes through the central fossae of the back teeth and the cingulum of the canines and incisors. Conversely, in the lower jaw, it traverses the buccal cusps of the back teeth and the incisal edges of the front teeth. The distal incline of the maxillary canine occludes with the mesial incline of the mandibular first premolar.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em><strong>Line of Occlusion<\/strong><\/em>: ALTERED&nbsp;in the maxillary and mandibular arches.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>Individual tooth irregularities (crowding\/spacing\/other localized tooth problems).<\/li><li>Inter-arch problems (open bite\/deep bite\/cross bite).<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><em><strong>Mesognathic<\/strong><\/em>: normal, straight face profile with flat facial appearance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1024\" height=\"768\" src=\"https:\/\/medinaz.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/CLASS-I-MALOCCLUSION.jpg\" alt=\"CLASS I MALOCCLUSION\" class=\"wp-image-1413\" srcset=\"https:\/\/medinaz.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/CLASS-I-MALOCCLUSION.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/medinaz.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/CLASS-I-MALOCCLUSION-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/medinaz.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/CLASS-I-MALOCCLUSION-768x576.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><figcaption><strong><span class=\"has-inline-color has-black-color\">CLASS I MALOCCLUSION<\/span><\/strong><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2><strong>ANGLE Class II Malocclusion: DISTOOCCLUSION&nbsp;(overjet)<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><em><strong>Molar relationship:<\/strong><\/em>&nbsp;The molar relationship shows the mesiobuccal groove of the mandibular first molar is&nbsp;DISTALLY&nbsp;(posteriorly) positioned when in occlusion with the mesiobuccal cusp of the maxillary first molar.&nbsp;Usually the mesiobuccal cusp of maxillary first molar rests in between the first mandibular molar and second premolar.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em><strong>Canine Relationship<\/strong><\/em>: The mesial incline of the maxillary canine occludes&nbsp;ANTERIORLY&nbsp;with the distal incline of the mandibular canine. The distal surface of the mandibular canine is POSTERIOR to the mesial surface of the maxillary canine by at least the width of a premolar.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em><strong>Line of occlusion<\/strong><\/em>&nbsp;is&nbsp;not specified but irregular, depending on facial pattern, overcrowded teeth and space needs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em><strong>Retrognatic:<\/strong><\/em>&nbsp;convex face profile resulting from a mandible that is too small or maxilla that is too large.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1024\" height=\"768\" src=\"https:\/\/medinaz.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/CLASS-II-MALOCCLUSION.jpg\" alt=\"CLASS II MALOCCLUSION\" class=\"wp-image-1414\" srcset=\"https:\/\/medinaz.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/CLASS-II-MALOCCLUSION.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/medinaz.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/CLASS-II-MALOCCLUSION-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/medinaz.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/CLASS-II-MALOCCLUSION-768x576.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><figcaption><strong><span class=\"has-inline-color has-black-color\">CLASS II MALOCCLUSION<\/span><\/strong><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Class II&nbsp;Malocclusion has&nbsp;<strong>2 subtypes<\/strong>&nbsp;to describe the position of anterior teeth:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2022<strong>&nbsp;Class II Division 1<\/strong>: The molar relationships are like that of Class II and the maxillary anterior teeth are&nbsp;protruded. Teeth are proclaimed and a&nbsp;large overjet&nbsp;is present.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2022\u00a0<strong>Class II Division 2<\/strong>: The molar relationships are Class II where the maxillary central incisors are\u00a0retroclined.
