Then discard it gently.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If it is bleeding like a fresh wound (bright red, dripping blood) bite on additional fresh gauze for approximately 30 more minutes. Repeat as necessary until the area is slight oozing and blood is dark &amp; clotting. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Remember a little blood and a lot of saliva will look like a lot of blood, usually it is just a lot of saliva. The goal is to keep blood clot in the socket to prevent bleeding and a painful complication known as <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/DAoVvuRXopg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">DRY SOCKET<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When bleeding persists at home, place a guaze pad or cold wet teabag over the area and bite firmly for 30 minutes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"2_Don%E2%80%99t_spit_and_don%E2%80%99t_suck_through_a_straw\"><\/span>2. <strong>Don\u2019t spit, and don\u2019t suck through a straw <\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Spitting or sucking through a straw will dislodge the clot formed at the extraction site and promote bleeding. It can lead to dry socket and delayed healing<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Drink water\/ juice directly from the glass.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"3_Don%E2%80%99t_rinse_your_mouth_and_don%E2%80%99t_brush\"><\/span>3. <strong>Don\u2019t rinse your mouth and don\u2019t brush<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Avoid<strong> <\/strong>rigorous rinsing, brushingor flossing next to the site of extraction <strong>for first 24 hours<\/strong>. As this can also dislodge the clot from the socket.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"4_Avoid_rubbing_the_area_with_your_tongue\"><\/span>4. <strong>Avoid rubbing the area<\/strong> with your tongue<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>It is very common to feel uneasy and discomfort at the site of extraction; but you should avoid frequent rubbing with tongue. It can cause clot dislodgment and bleeding.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"5_Elevate_head\"><\/span>5. <strong>Elevate head<\/strong><strong><\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Keep your <strong>head elevated<\/strong> on several pillows or sit in a lounge chair for <strong>12 hours<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"6_Do_not_smoke_or_use_tobacco\"><\/span>6. <strong>Do not smoke or use tobacco<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Avoid smoking or use of tobacco for 24 hours after surgery. The sucking action of smoking a cigarette or pipe can dislodge a blood clot and cause a <strong>dry socket<\/strong>. This also slows the healing process.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"7_Warm_salt_water_rinse\"><\/span>7. <strong>Warm salt water rinse<\/strong><strong><\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>After the first 24 hours following surgery, rinse gently with warm salt water after every meal. Use about 1 teaspoon of salt per glass of warm water. You can continue this for 1-2 weeks. Brush gently avoiding the extraction sites for 1-2 weeks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"8_Rest_after_tooth_extraction\"><\/span>8. <strong>Rest<\/strong> after tooth extraction<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Avoid strenuous exercise during the first 24 hours, and keep the mouth from excessive movement. Physical activity may increase bleeding.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"9_Soft_food_intake\"><\/span>9. <strong>Soft food intake<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Eat a soft diet for first 24 hours after the tooth extraction. Avoid foods that require excessive chewing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"10_Avoid_nose-blowing_or_sneezing\"><\/span>10. <strong>Avoid nose-blowing or sneezing<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>If you had upper teeth removed avoid blowing your nose and sneezing for the first week (if you must sneeze, do so with your mouth open to prevent sinus damage).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"11_Apply_an_ice_pack_after_tooth_extraction\"><\/span>11. <strong>Apply an ice pack<\/strong> after tooth extraction<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>To reduce swelling, you can apply an ice pack to the affected area at 10 minute intervals for the first 24 hours.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ice constricts blood vessels, which numbs pain and relieves inflammation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"12_Pain_killers\"><\/span>12. <strong>Pain killers<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>To control discomfort, take pain medication before the anesthetic has worn off or as recommended by your dentist.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"13_Take_antibiotics\"><\/span>13. <strong>Take antibiotics<\/strong><strong><\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>You may be given a prescription for antibiotics. Be sure to take them as directed.
