It means that it dissolves in fats and oils. These fat soluble vitamins are absorbed along with fats in the diet and are stored in the body with a half-life of 1-2 days.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Vitamin D is also known by other names such as calciferol or sunshine vitamin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There are two major forms of vitamin D, i.e vitamin D2 or ergocalciferol and vitamin D3, or cholecalciferol. Vitamin D2 is made naturally by plants, whereas vitamin D3 is made naturally by body when skin is exposed to ultraviolet radiation in sunlight (UVB). Both forms are converted to 25-hydroxyvitamin D in the liver. 25-Hydroxyvitamin D then travels through the blood to the kidneys, where it is further modified to 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D or calcitriol, Orlistat : It reduces the absorption of vitamin D from food and supplements, leading to low levels of 25 (OH) D levels<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>2. Statins : This medication reduces the cholesterol synthesis. As the vitamin D is derived from cholesterol, steroids may also reduce vitamin D synthesis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>3. Steroids : They are used to reduce inflammation. It can also reduce calcium absorption and then affects vitamin D metabolism.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>4. Thiazide diuretics : It decreases urinary calcium excretion. Combination of these diuretics with vitamin D supplements (in which there is increase in intestinal calcium absorption) may cause hypercalcemia. This happens especially in older adults and individuals with compromised renal function or hyperthyroidism.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"9-diagnosis-\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Diagnosis\"><\/span><strong>Diagnosis:<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>There are two blood tests to diagnose vitamin D deficiency.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The most common is the 25-hydroxyvitamin D, known as 25 (OH)D.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Range of Normal blood serum levels are 50 \u2013 100 micrograms per decilitre.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Levels of 50 nmol\/L (20 ng\/mL) or above are adequate for most people for bone and overall health.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The levels below 30 nmol\/L (12 ng\/mL) are too low and might weaken your bones and affect your health.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Levels above 125 nmol\/L (50 ng\/mL) are too high and might cause health problems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"10-vitamin-d-deficiency-treatment-\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Vitamin_D_deficiency_Treatment\"><\/span>Vitamin D deficiency <strong>Treatment:<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Deficiency of Vitamin D is primarily treated with vitamin D supplementation.
