It is a rare disease that is caused by infection with monkeypox virus(MPXV).&nbsp;It belongs to the&nbsp;<em>Orthopoxvirus<\/em>&nbsp;genus. This genus also includes variola virus which cause smallpox.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It can infect non-human primates, rodents and some other mammals.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Most of these cases primarily occur in tropical rainforest areas of Central and Western Africa. Recently in 2022 a few Monkeypox cases were reported in the United States, Canada, France, &amp; Australia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Monkeypox doesn\u2019t occur naturally in this part; however, cases have happened that were associated with international travel or importing animals from areas where the disease is more common.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Why_is_it_called_monkeypox_virus\"><\/span><strong>Why is it called monkeypox virus?<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>That\u2019s because the virus was first discovered in monkeys (hence the name) in 1958, and in humans in 1970<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Is_Monkeypox_contagious\"><\/span><strong>Is Monkeypox contagious?<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Yes! <\/strong>It may spread from handling\u00a0bushmeat, an animal bite or scratch. It can be transmitted through direct contact with infected person\u2019s body fluids or lesion material.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"What_are_monkeypox_symptoms\"><\/span><strong>What are monkeypox&nbsp;symptoms?<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>In humans, the symptoms of monkeypox are similar to but milder than the symptoms of smallpox. The illness begins with:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The main difference between symptoms of smallpox and monkeypox is that monkeypox causes lymph nodes to swell (Lymphadenopathy), which is called lymphadenopathy. In comparison smallpox does not cause lymphadenopathy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>Fever<\/li><li>Headache<\/li><li>Muscle aches (myalgia)<\/li><li>Back pain<\/li><li>Swollen lymph nodes<\/li><li>Chills<\/li><li>Exhaustion<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The incubation period is usually 7\u221214 days but can range from 5\u221221 days.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Within 1 to 3 days after the appearance of fever, the patient develops a rash, often beginning on the face and later spreading to other parts of the body.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Lesions progress through the following stages before falling off:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Macules &#8211; These are the lesions with a flat base<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Papules &#8211; Lesions are slightly raised firm<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Vesicles &#8211; Here lesions are filled with clear fluid<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Pustules- In this the lesions are filled with yellowish fluid<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Crusts which eventually dries up and fall-off<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The illness typically lasts for 2\u22124 weeks. In Africa, monkeypox has been shown to cause death in as many as 1 in 10 persons who contract the disease.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Complications_of_this_disease_includes\"><\/span>Complications of this disease includes:<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>Secondary infections<\/li><li>Bronchopneumonia<\/li><li>Sepsis<\/li><li>Encephalitis<\/li><li>Infection of the cornea with ensuing loss of vision.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The extent to which asymptomatic infection may occur is unknown.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The case fatality ratio of monkeypox has historically ranged from 0 to 11 % in the general population and has been higher among young children. In recent times, the case fatality ratio has been around 3-6%.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"How_is_it_diagnosed\"><\/span><strong>How is it diagnosed?<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Detection of viral DNA by Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) is the preferred laboratory test for monkeypox. Test results should be interpreted together with clinical features.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Also, there can be a false positive result from the recent or remote vaccination with a vaccinia-based vaccine (e.g. anyone vaccinated before smallpox eradication, or more recently vaccinated due to higher risk such as orthopoxvirus laboratory personnel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Is_it_possible_to_prevent_monkeypox\"><\/span><strong>Is it possible to prevent monkeypox?<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Yes! There are number of measures that can be taken:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8211; Avoiding eating or touching animals known to acquire the virus in the wild&nbsp;(mainly African rodents and monkeys)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8211; Avoid contact with animals that are sick or that have been found dead in areas where monkeypox occurs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8211; Avoid contact with any materials, such as bedding, that has been in contact with a sick animal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>Isolate infected patients from others who could be at risk for infection.<\/li><li>Practice good hand hygiene after contact with infected animals or humans.&nbsp;<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>For example, washing your hands with soap and water or using an alcohol-based hand sanitizer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Use personal protective equipment (PPE) when caring for patients.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Treatment_of_Monkeypox\"><\/span><strong>Treatment<\/strong> of Monkeypox:<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Currently, there is no proven, safe treatment for monkeypox virus infection.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So In order to control and prevent monkeypox outbreak,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>smallpox vaccine, antivirals like (Cidofovir&nbsp;or&nbsp;brincidofovir), and vaccinia immune globulin (VIG) can be used.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Recently in 2022, European Medical Association (EMA) has licensed an antiviral agent known as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/news-room\/fact-sheets\/detail\/monkeypox\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">tecovirimat<\/a> for smallpox. It is not yet widely available. If used for patient care, tecovirimat should ideally be monitored in a clinical research context with prospective data collection.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>What is Monkeypox virus?
