However, you don&#8217;t need to take all type of hair loss seriously. As a human being it is normal to shed around 100 hairs a day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Our hair goes through a life cycle that involves multiples phases like growth, resting followed by shedding. However, if the hair loss is persistent then it can be caused due to many other health issues.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Alopecia can be seen in bald patch of small size, receding hairline, hair thinning on the crown and temples. This condition is called androgenic alopecia, which starts with a sign of a receding hairline and bald spots in men and thinning hair along the crown of the scalp in women.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It usually occurs gradually and in predictable patterns which is often referred as male-pattern baldness and female-pattern baldness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"2_Hormonal_changes_and_medical_conditions\"><\/span><strong>2. Hormonal changes and medical conditions<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Women undergo hormonal hormonal changes due to pregnancy, childbirth, menopause that can cause permanent or temporary hair loss. Women with conditions like polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) and congenital adrenal hyperplasia (CAH) have higher androgen levels, experiences female pattern hair loss.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Both men and women may experience hair loss from changes in thyroid hormone levels.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Medical conditions like ringworm infections, cicatricial alopecia, and traumatic alopecia can also lead to hair loss.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Other causes are medical condition such as alopecia areata, an immune condition that causes patchy hair loss, scalp infections such as ringworm.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Also, a hair-pulling disorder called trichotillomania a mental disorder that causes the urge to pull out your own hair can cause hair loss.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"3_Medications_and_supplements\"><\/span><strong>3. Medications and supplements<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Few drugs can cause hair loss as a side-effects. It is evident during the treatment of various diseases like:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>cancer<\/li><li>depression,&nbsp;<\/li><li>gout<\/li><li>high blood pressure<\/li><li>heart diseases<\/li><li>arthritis<\/li><li>Acne (isotretinoin)<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>*Discontinuing birth control pills can also cause <a href=\"https:\/\/www.americanhairloss.org\/women_hair_loss\/oral_contraceptives.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">temporary hair loss<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"4_Radiation_therapy\"><\/span><strong>4. If scarring occurs, hair loss could be permanent<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Risk_factors\"><\/span><strong>Risk factors<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>These factors can increase your risk of hair loss:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>Age<\/li><li>Medication like anticoagulants (heparin, warfarin), anticonvulsants (Valproic acid, trimethadione)<\/li><li>A family history of balding on maternal or paternal side<\/li><li>Illnesses such as diabetes and hyper\/hypothyroidism, SLE<\/li><li>Stress<\/li><li>Nutritional deficiencies of iron, zinc, protein<\/li><li>Poor hygiene which can predispose to tinea capitis (more common in children)<\/li><li>Significant weight loss<\/li><li>Male sex which is at increased risk of androgenetic alopecia<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Takeaway\"><\/span><strong>Takeaway:<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Signs of hair loss can vary from person to person.
